Unfortunately, most of his stories were never documented. This one, however, was written down on scratch paper and mailed to his three great-grandsons while they were living in South Carolina. It is based on an actual incident that occurred in the early 1970’s. A small switch engine had been accidently left running one night at the Stauffer Chemical Works in Tarpon Springs, Florida. The gates to the railroad yard had been left open and the little engine with two empty cars attached chugged out the gates and as far as Brooksville, Florida, before it was commandeered by a railroad employee and returned to the Chemical Plant. Here is the story as presented by our grandfather, Samuel C. Marks, known to his grandchildren simply as “Sam.” He named the little engine “Herman,” and this is Herman’s adventures through the woods and swamps of western Florida to Brooksville
