|About the Book|
Upon first reading the standards without the rest of the document, I sincerely thought, What a bunch of bunk. They are so vague. but after spending time reading the explanations, justifications and vignettes, I believe that the IRA and NCTE have the right idea.I am a volunteer tutor of literacy and a literacy nonprofit employee. I work with all levels of adults learning to read and write. The only drawback to the standards that were not mentioned in the conclusion was time invested. I have the luxury of tutoring one student and being able to prepare one hour lessons without ahaving to evaluate more than one project or lesson at a time. Classroom teachers sometimes have upwards of 150 students per day to prepare for, teach and evaluate. Having been in the classroom, I know that papers and projects to grade can prevent even the best teachers from preparing specialized, interdisciplinary lesson on a daily basis.Again, the authoring bodies of this document have the goals teachers need to aim for.
